About Rev. Dr. Kyohei Mikawa:

Rev. Dr. Kyohei Mikawa is the minister of Rissho Kosei-kai Buddhist Center of Los Angeles (RKLA). He earned a PhD degree at the University of Chicago Divinity School in 2023. Focus of his study is philosophy of Chinese Buddhist school called Tiantai, whose interpretation of the Buddhist text Lotus Sutra made major impacts on the formation of subsequent schools of Buddhism in China, Japan and beyond. Besides offering various courses at RKLA, he also teaches graduate courses on the Lotus Sutra at Meadville Lombard Theological School of Chicago as an affiliate faculty.

He was born and raised in a Buddhist family in Japan and is a third generation member of Rissho Kosei-kai. At the beginning of the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, he started a YouTube channel called “The Lotus Sutra Lab” (https://apac01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2F%40AwakenYourInnerBuddha%2Fvideos&data=05%7C02%7C%7C9e925621c4464ef98cb808ded104da36%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C639178015936978628%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=%2FKvJNth6QIUtA5RGWCqOUj7Frw9VZbFcIsw72YP2QmQ%3D&reserved=0) to reach out and support those who are interested in practicing Buddhism and yet geographically distanced from local Buddhist groups.

After he earned a doctorate degree, he stayed in the US to further develop and promote Buddhist ideas and practices of the Lotus Sutra in Anglo-European continent. His passion for the vision is based on his conviction that buddhists who have a spiritual background of monotheistic worldview can make unique and important contributions towards the formation of a new aspect of traditional Buddhism that arose in non-monotheistic cultural ground.

Kyohei is the husband of his wife Emily and their two children. He is one of the students of the late Gene Reeves, whose publications include an English translation of the Threefold Lotus Sutra and The Stories of the Lotus Sutra.
